Angling: A tough week on the water

KLAA: A TOUGH week on KLAA waters was the verdict from the anglers on the bank.

Some rivers seem to be slowing down as the bites become harder to find.

Predator anglers now seem to have most of the banks on both the Great Ouse and the Middle Level as they start to home in on the selected species as the coarse anglers start to drift away.

Ten Mile Bank: Quite difficult to locate the fish and only a handful of anglers have been catching as the cold autumn winds finally start to arrive.

The odd tench and perch showing with a handful of small roach, skimmers are slowly disappearing to the slower waters, while roach shoals are disappearing back upstream towards Danby Drove and the Owl Box.

Modney Bridge: Probably the busiest venue on TMB this week but sadly not many fish reported.

The odd small skimmer, a few perch and some quality roach have been recorded.

Middle Level: Slow during the last week as temperatures start to fall and only the odd angler catching at both Neeps and Crooked Chimney.

Roach, perch and skimmers showing, but everywhere else fish have been hard to find.

small jacks

Peter's Bridge is attracting a few more predator anglers and small jacks have been reported plus a small double towards the High Road end.

Little Ouse: Hope on the horizon as weed has started to die off and the fish are starting to feed.

Plenty of roach showing on seed baits, while the rudd, dace and bleak showing on pinkie and maggot.

Shepherd's Port to Bear Lake: Still a few anglers around during the last week.

Small carp showing all around the lake and a few of the bigger ones have appeared, but corn sorting out the better fish.

Pellet and maggot working well for the pasties.

Shepherd's Lake: Lynn's most consistent water this year with silver fish nets to double-figures continuously being reported.

Carp starting to slow off from the feed but the skimmers and bream are still feeding strongly.

Fly fishing

NARBOROUGH Trout Lakes (01760 338005): What a week it has been for Narborough Trout Lakes with fish to more than 16lbs.

Ashford and Meadow Lakes have been fishing well but its the specimen lake Willow that has suddenly burst into life.

Not only has it produced the 16.75lbs fish but several fish between 12-15lbs and a whole host of fish between 10-12lbs.

John Webber was the lucky angler to take the big fish during a corporate day when he tempted the monster fish.

There was a another corporate day the next day, with the biggest fish then weighing in at more than 15lbs and was captured by Richard Winsor.

Just about any fly has been taking at the moment, but blood worms, cats whiskers and montanas have been more constant.

For the specimen lake, try fast sinking flies such as stalking bugs and gold heads. Be prepared to look for the bigger fish.

Blackdyke Trout Fishery (07525 730447): Has seen record numbers of anglers through the gates this week.

Most anglers have been catching stockies but a few of the older and bigger resident fish have been taken.

Tony Keeley (pictured) took four rainbows for a combined weight of 10lbs 3ozs and also caught and released a brown trout estimated at 6lbs.

The lake is clear and daddies, buzzers and montanas have all worked over the past week. There are now boats available for hire, as well as tuition from Mr Tim Gaunt-baker. For more details, contact Paul Speed on 07525 730447.

Coarse fishing

Pocohontas (07876 151247): Alex Hughes of Wisbech hit the jackpot during a 24-hour session at Pocohontas, taking three fish in the early hours of the morning, weighing in at 15lbs, 19.5lbs and 22lbs 2ozs.

Hughes was fishing on the river side near the boat house, using a single white chocolate boilie over a bed of particles.

Bridge Farm (01328 701699): Sweetcorn and small pieces of luncheon meat fished on small hooks seem to be working best.

Floats should be weighted right down for better indication.

Thursday's match results: 1 Bill Bullock 55lbs 3ozs, 2 Dave Bates 16lbs 15ozs, 3 Steve Brown 13lbs 2ozs.
