Sport - Angling: Cold snap hits most waters

KLAA

By Darren Reed

THE last seven days has been very different with catches reported in the early stages of the week, before dropping at the tail end of the week due to the sudden drop in temperatures.

Temperatures were recorded at minus five at Shepherd’s Port on Saturday and minus three on the banks of Ten Mile on Sunday.

Earlier, catches were reported from both Ten Mile and Shepherd’s Lake.

Ten Mile Bank: Bream, skimmers, roach and perch all showed up well, with nets to 20lb on the Chapel to Modney Bridge stretch.

Bream, skimmers and roach all appeared on the tip and pole line.

Danby Drove also produced some rewarding catches with skimmers showing well and nets reported to 13lb.

Specimen anglers have also found the fish with a few pike showing around the Wissey Mouth stretch.

Perch have been targeting small pieces of worm, small spinners and lures. Jacks have been present at most of the favoured stretches.

On Saturday and Sunday, the fish started to descend into deeper water as the temperatures began to drop rapidly.

Nets more than 20lb were reported during the last seven days and, with milder conditions forecast during the later stages of this week, hopefully catches will continue to pick up.

Middle Level: A few anglers, mainly predator, have been on the banks of the level, although no reports have been forthcoming.

A few jacks have been coming out and the odd pike to 15lb has been seen caught.

Peter’s through to Mortons has been the more rewarding for the predator anglers.

After a good start to the week, catches dried up on Shepherd’s Lake.

Bream, carp and skimmers were all showing well up until Friday, as did silvers which disappeared to deeper waters when it turned colder.

The next meeting of the Lynn PAC will be on Thursday, January 26, at the William Burt Centre, West Winch, (7.30pm).

The guest speaker will be top pike angler and TV fishing presenter Mick Brown.

Nar Valley Fisheries

SINCE Christmas, only a few anglers have tried their luck at the venue.

Lake Geneva has produced a few carp to mid-20lbs and some double-figure pike over the last fortnight.

Fenn Lake has been the most consistent venue with reports of quality carp feeding well, the best fish so far is a 26lb common.
