Sport - Angling: Water loss causing trouble at Tottenhill

FOR those anglers who have visited Tottenhill recently, you will have noticed the extreme loss of water.

This has become something of a trend over the last two years, but over recent months has reflected even more on the drought being suffered in the Fenland area.

It has reached a point where there is only around 600mm of depth remaining and it has become increasingly concerning if the venue doesn’t receive more than the 300m of rainfall required to protect it in the summer.

We have consulted with many experts over what is happening with the water and the KLAA committee have spent many hours discussing their options, with the prime objective being the protection of the key asset – the fish.

Due to this, the KLAA have been left with little choice other than to crop the larger fish and transfer them to the Shepherd’s Port complex. But what does this mean for the future of Tottenhill?

Given the current water levels, the KLAA feel the need to further understand what water levels can be sustained, to provide a habitat that will support the size of fish it does today.

The KLAA committee have therefore decided to reduce the price of bronze membership tickets for 2012, until they understand the future sustainability of the venue and in what form.

This is not something they wanted, given their major investment in the venue during 2009, but hope anglers understand why the committee have been left with little choice other than to protect their assets, before these become unsustainable.

Unfortunately, due to the recent bad weather, no reports were received from any of the venues this week.

Following the success of a previous competition, the KLAA are pleased to invite anglers to take part in an integration lure fishing match, where anglers from different parts of Europe will be fishing together in order to catch the best bag of predators.

The concept is aimed at building bridges between the eastern European anglers and the local community.

The match will take place on Saturday, March 3, on Ten Mile Bank, Denver Sluice.

Draw at Jenyns Arms (PE38 0EQ) with registration between 7.30am and 8.30 am.

Entrance fee is £10 with a £3 peg fee. Fishery rules can be obtained from the website at: www.klaa.co.uk/fisheries/ten-mile-bank

NAR VALLEY FISHERIES

TODAY will see the initial stocking of trout into Hobbs Lake at 10.30am.

This will coincide with an open morning from 9am to 1pm, where any prospective and existing members may come to view the complex, especially the new trout lake.

Permits for the new fishery will be on sale at that time, and the fisheries team will be pleased to explain the site rules and regulations.

The venue will be officially opened on Thursday, March 1, by TV angling celebrity John Wilson.

He will be on hand all morning to talk tips and tactics and he will also be trying his luck to bag a fish.

The coarse lakes have been frozen for the past two weeks, although the causeway side of Lake Geneva is now clear up to 50 metres from the works end to the point.

The ice will soon break up if the milder weather and winder conditions prevail for the rest of this week.
