Juniors make their presence felt
Junior members from Ryston Runners Athletics Club made their presence felt at the West Norfolk Schools Cross Country finals, held at Lynnsport.
Kit Howlett dominated the Year 3 boys’ race, producing a committed run with an amazing turn of speed over the last 100m to secure victory.
Anna Wood ran a determined and well paced race in the Year 3 girls’ event to match Howlett’s achievement, with clubmate Mia Moore’s gutsy run securing her third place.
It was a similar story in the Year 6 races, with Brandon Tuttle taking a well-deserved victory
in the boys’ race, while Thea Howlett dominated the field in the girls’ event.
Clubmate Maddie Dawson was placed second, and a determined Malu Nair fifth.
All these youngsters are pupils at South Wootton Primary School and will represent the West at the Norfolk Schools Championships, in March.
Postponed in January, due to snow, the rescheduled Folksworth 15 took place in wet, windy and chilly conditions.
Six Ryston Runners took part, and excellent runs by all made for an almost enjoyable pre-marathon try-out.
In his first 15 mile race, coming home in 16th position (sixth senior man), finishing in a respectable 1.35.25, was Che Plant.
Second for the club was Mark Riches in 1.52.48 (95th).
Pauline Drewery was third home, and first woman for Ryston, in 1.57.55 (154th, knocking a massive ten minutes of her previous best on this course.
Martin Hammond had another strong performance, finishing 2.07.44 (213th), followed closely behind by Karen Smith 2.10.54 (237th) with an impressive six-minute PB on last year’s result.
Pauline Sparrow brought home the Ryston contingent in 2.23.00 (313th), first in the W60 category.
Three Ryston members were among the 300 runners who took part in the Valentine 10k, promoted by Norfolk Gazelles and based at Easton College, Norwich.
Phillip Seaman ran 49.42 for 121st position, sixth in his age group.
Jane Ashby placed 183rd overall and third in her age group in 54 minutes .
Martin Blackburn was 203rd (11th in age group) in 56.32.
