Sports centre membership figures hit all-time record
Council-run sports and leisure centres across North Norfolk are celebrating their highest visitor numbers in six years.
Figures for the period from April 2010 to March 2011 showed a 4.2pc increase in users of the centres in Fakenham, Cromer, North Walsham, Sheringham and Stalham.
The mobile gym which targets small communities across the region had also proved very popular.
Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre on Trap Lane had attracted 84,401 users, by far its highest number since opening in 2005.
General manager Pat Dodd said: “I’m absolutely delighted with these figures. Our remit has always been to increase participation and we’ve exceeded our targets. Users represent a broad mix of people who enjoy the gym, the sports hall and the various classes.
“Membership is now around a thousand which is also the best we’ve ever had.
“One of the key factors in all this was the introduction of a £16.99 a month membership fee which has proved very popular in this tough financial period.”
She was hopeful that the current year’s figures would turn out to be even better.
