Craig's keen to impress
NEWLY-installed Linnets captain Craig McAughtrie wants fans to like him for his performances at The Walks – not because he already has two Conference North winners medals to his name.
The 28-year-old no-nonsense defender put pen-to-paper on Saturday after playing a pivotal role in Tamworth's title success last season.
And McAughtrie's exciting arrival was quickly followed by the that of young midfielder Matt Birley, also from Tamworth, yesterday.
Burton-on-Trent-based McAughtrie, who has won Blue Square North honours with both Tamworth and Stafford Rangers, said: "It's a great honour and a massive responsibility to be asked to lead your team.
"I'm full of ambition and what Carl is trying to achieve at Lynn matches that. He made it clear from the day he got the job that he wanted me and as a player it is nice to feel so wanted.
"I'm looking for success and I want my football to do the talking on the pitch.
"I want the fans at King's Lynn to like me because I come to the club and perform for them on the pitch week-in and week-out, not because I've won two Blue Square North titles."
McAughtrie, a policeman, began his professional career with Sheffield United as a trainee before moving to Carlisle United.
Two years later he joined Stafford Rangers where he made more than 200 appearances, helping them to promotion from the Conference North, before switching to Tamworth in 2007.
Delighted Linnets boss Carl Heggs said: "Craig is an out-and-out winner, who won't be intimidated by anyone.
"He turned down two Conference North Clubs to sign for us and he hasn't come because of money. Like Gareth (Sheldon) he is a big, big signing for us.
"We've now got a sprinkling of experience with Craig, Gareth and Andy Johnson in our side and we've also got some very good young players who are the future of this club.
"You look at the squad I've put together and what Boston United are doing and they would snap your right arm off to have just one of my players."
Birley (22) fits into Heggs' vision for the future.
The Worcester-based youngster played in the Premiership for Birmingham against Chelsea when he was 19, before signing for Tamworth from Bromsgrove Rovers after a brief spell with Lincoln City and a trial with AFC Bournemouth.
l Linnets fans have unanimously voted to form a Supporters Trust at the club.
At a well-attended meeting in the Blue and Gold bar on Thursday, fans listened to speakers from Supporters Direct and Cambridge United and Norwich City Supporters Trusts before voting to form a similar venture at The Walks.
The steering group behind the trust will now begin the task of setting up the trust this week.
