DOWNHAM Town Cricket Club president Don Rowell welcomed members of all the senior teams together with parents and members of the club’s youth teams to the 2011 presentation evening at the Downham Town Sports Federation.

He said that although the club’s first XI had missed out on a fifth Norfolk Alliance Premier Division title it still remained a force within the league, and finally finished third in 2011.

The club’s other sides had also remained competitive in their respective leagues with the second XI finishing mid-table, the third XI runners-up and the fourth XI third.

The club were indebted to the continued support of the main Sponsors namely: C.G.M, Downham Country Garden Store, Shire Foods of Norfolk, The Downham Tandoori, ARC Fabrications and Agecare Eastern, together with all the local companies who took out advertising in the fixture card and on match days, vice-presidents and all those who helped behind the scenes, especially the tea ladies.

Club captain Duncan Lanchester thanked all those who had helped make the season run smoothly.

He paid tribute to Don Rowell in particular, who he said worked tirelessly behind the scenes in obtaining grants and other monies from different sources to keep the club in a very healthy financial situation.

He said the president’s golf day was a major source of Income and this was down to the hard work of Don Rowell himself.

On the playing side, Lanchester said the club lacked some consistency at times during the season which led to their downfall.

Minor things such as players being off form, injuries, the expectancy of players to perform at a higher level and decisions that went against them.

He went on to say that a decade ago if the club had finished third in the Premier Division everyone would have been over the moon but, after the past four seasons it was a disappointment.

However, he and his team were looking forward to the coming season, which will be the longest ever in the Alliance’s history before reverting to the norm, with high hopes of again challenging for the Premier League title.

Chairman Stewart Thulbourne, following brief resumes of the 2011 season by the various team captains, presented the following awards;

What happened in Hertfordshire, remains in Hertfordshire, but Downham will be back. The Tourist of the Year was Patrick Yates.

Presentations were also made to Dekker Lanchester for his help on preparing the ground and wickets, and to Ray Hubbard for his help in the kitchen during second eleven home fixtures.
