A PARTY of 21 students from Swaffham Hamond’s High School left for a 10-day trip to Kenya on Wednesday after getting Foreign Office go-ahead following recent unrest in that country caused by the actions of Somali pirates.

Deputy head Trudy Welham, one of four adults leading the party, told the Lynn News it had been a “turbulent few weeks” of not knowing whether they would be going.

“But the Foreign Office has given us the go-ahead because they are satisfied with the arrangements we have made for while we are out there,” she said.

The students have taken some kit from the Norfolk Cricket Board to give to deprived youngsters in the African country.

The donated equipment was handed over to the students at the Brandon Road school last week by Kieron Tuck, Norfolk cricket development manager.

Three of the students, who are younger players with Swaffham Cricket Club, recently completed their Cricket for Young Leaders course and during the trip they will be teaching the basics of the sport to children in deprived areas of the capital Nairobi and leaving the kit with them.

Miss Welham said the students had managed to raise the £1,200 cost of the trip for each of them through fundraising efforts, personal sponsorship and generous donations from local businesses and organisations.

“We have had a massive donation from the Mason Trust, who have supported other Norfolk youngsters in the past and seen the effect it has by offering a life-changing opportunity,” she said.

“We have also had money from Barclays Bank, Rotary and the Lions in Swaffham and numerous other smaller donations.”
