Cup of joy for Reserves

NORFOLK SENIOR CUP FINAL Wroxham 1 Lynn Reserves 3

RESERVES boss Steve Lilley paid tribute to his young guns and backroom team after Lynn Reserves lifted the Norfolk Senior Cup for the first in 26 years on Wednesday night.

Late goals from Andrew Fisk and Rory Harper capped a memorable night for Lynn's second string after Andy Key's header had cancelled out Dominic Dwyer's opener.

After seeing his troops end Wroxham's recent dominance in the competition, a delighted Lilley said: "It's probably the biggest achievement of my managerial career so far, but it will be an even bigger achievement if we can now go on and stay up.

"This is just reward for the boys and the work they put in. They are dedicated and just love playing. They are a joy to work with.

"The core of this side is from last season's youth team and I hope the club look after them as they are such a good crop of youngsters.

"This night is for them and all of my backroom team of Neil (Fryatt), Marc (Curson), Browny (physio) and the likes of Norman Cesar and Des Stewart.

"Norman does so much work behind the scenes which often goes unrecognised. He has been with us through thick and thin, as has Des."

Lilley added: "There's a real togetherness about the side and it was nice to see everyone joining in the celebrations at the end.

"It will give everyone at the club a real lift after what has been a tough few weeks."

All of the goals in a tense final came in the final quarter and Lynn were forced to do it the hard way after the harsh sending-off of Gary Bush midway through the second period for his second yellow card.

"Gary was in bits after the game and quite rightly so. He's been with us all season and it's horrible for the boy," said Lilley.

"It wasn't a dirty game and it certainly didn't warrant that many bookings."

A quiet opening hour was sparked into life by Bush's dismissal in the 67th minute.

But the Ronaldo-like antics of Wroxham's Danny Self did little to help the defender's cause after an innocuous coming together between the pair.

As a dejected Bush trudged off the field, Lynn's Senior Cup dream looked in tatters, but their desire and extra quality deservedly pulled them through.

It took a rocket strike from Dwyer, which took a slight deflection, to hand Lynn a 72nd-minute lead.

Wroxham rarely troubled the Lynn defence, which was magnificently held together by Charlie Defty and Lee Hyde, before Key's equaliser from a Danny White corner eight minutes later.

Lynn restored their advantage two minutes from time when some nice play between Dwyer and Harper found Fisk just inside the box.

The midfielder composed himself with an extra touch before planting the ball past Duncan McAnally between the Wroxham posts.

Some fine play from Dwyer set up Harper for a breakaway third in the dying seconds and the celebrations began.
