FOOTBALL: Turner’s cup hat-trick

Norfolk Senior Cup 4th round

Thetford Town 0

King’s Lynn Town 3

A Jason Turner hat-trick eased the Linnets into the last eight of the Norfolk Senior Cup at Mundford Road last night.

The striker broke the deadlock just before half-time before adding two more goals after the break to see off a spirited Thetford outfit.

Having created an FA Trophy upset last time out, the boot was nearly on the other foot for Lynn in the opening moments as James Pipe hit the post after being put through on goal.

That set the tone for an open first period in which neither defence ever looked entirely comfortable.

George Thomson volleyed wide for the Linnets, while Thetford keeper Ian Fancett made a smart double save to deny Turner and Jamie Thurlbourne.

At the other end, Keiron Morphew headed over from a free-kick, while Pipe couldn’t latch onto a John Curtis pass with the goal at his mercy.

And given the number of close shaves at both ends of the pitch, it was surprising that it took until two minutes before the interval for the deadlock to be broken.

Ryan Fryatt’s pass looked harmless enough, but indecision in the Thetford defence allowed captain for the evening Turner, who had earlier had a goal ruled out for offside, to prod home from close range.

The Lynn defence had another scare soon after the restart, though, as John Curtis had a goal chalked off for offside

But Turner’s second of the night just after the hour gave Gary Setchell’s side a cushion they never really looked like relinquishing.

And the game was over as a contest 17 minutes from time as Turner found the net after Luke Biles’ initial effort had been blocked.

There was still time for substitute Steve Spriggs to force Fancett into his best save of a fine all-round performance when he tipped away a fiercely struck free kick.
