FA Trophy

Market Drayton 2

King’s Lynn Town 2

Two goals in the final seven minutes saw Lynn keep their FA Trophy hopes alive with an unlikely draw at Market Drayton.

After missing a host of chances, the Linnets found themselves two goals down at their lower-league hosts.

But late goals from substitute Sam Mulready and George Thomson, who also missed a penalty for the second successive game, earned Gary Setchell’s side a second bite of the cherry.

Boss Setchell said: “If we’d lost the game it would have been one of those cup ties where we couldn’t have done any more.

“It just goes to show that we are never dead. We kept believing and working hard and scored two good goals.

“I think we were the better team. Performance-wise it was okay but had we lost 2-1 it would have been a bad result.

“If we’d put our chances away we could have been 3-0 up after 15 minutes. In football matches goals change games.

“We’ve done it to so many teams in the league above us and we nearly had it done to us today.”

Market Drayton took the lead on 18 minutes when poor defending in the Lynn area saw skipper James Askey strike after an initial shot had been blocked by Henry Eze.

Despite dominating both possession and chances created, a combination of wayward shooting, the woodwork, unfortunate deflections and good saves denied Lynn.

When Thomson did get the ball in the net it was disallowed for offside before he saw his penalty for handball saved a minute before half-time.

Lynn went two goals down in the 54th minute when Joe Woolley prodded home after more poor defending from Lynn. The Linnets still created chances with Thomson and David Bridges striking the woodwork.

In the 83rd minute Mulready pulled a goal back for Lynn, scoring from two yards after good play by Jake Jones.

Three minutes from time, Thomson made amends for his earlier miss with a stunning volley after Gregg Smith’s cross had been headed back across goal by Jones.
