FA Trophy First Qualifying Round replay

King’s Lynn Town 5

Market Drayton Town 1

King’s Lynn Town manager Gary Setchell believes midfielder David Bridges is starting to establish himself as a key player at The Walks.

Despite making a slow start to his Linnets career, Bridges has started to come into his own in recent games and was one of the scorers in Lynn’s 5-1 FA Trophy win over Market Drayton on Tuesday night.

Bridges, who arrived at the club from Brackley in the summer, got the ball rolling by opening the scoring in the replay before Steven Spriggs (2), Gregg Smith and George Thomson eased Lynn into the Second Qualifying Round.

Setchell said: “The stand-out performer for me tonight was David Bridges.

“Quigs (Dan Quigley) and him in the middle of midfield really give us a bit of steel in there. For me, David is getting better and better.

“He was good on Saturday and tonight he was the player who reached his levels. He is really going to be a big player for us in the second half of the season, I know he is.

“If we’d have gone out of the Trophy on Saturday I wouldn’t have had any complaints with the result, just with the way we finished.

“It was a very similar game tonight. We dominated again, but tonight we put five of our 15 chances away and Saturday we only took two and conceded two sloppy goals.

“I just felt we needed to stay patient tonight and keep trying to pass the ball.”

It took Lynn until the 44th minute to break the deadlock when Jordan Yong and Spriggs combined and Bridges netted with a looping header.

The goal finally broke Drayton’s stubborn resistance at the back and it was one-way traffic in the second period.

Two minutes after the restart, the in-form Thomson took advantage of some poor defending to round the keeper and score his ninth goal in six games.

Spriggs bagged the goal of the game a minute later with an angled drive, which flew into the net.

Cohen Bramall pulled a goal back for the visitors just after the hour-mark, but two minutes later Smith restored Lynn’s three-goal cushion when he converted Spriggs’ centre for his first goal for the club.

Spriggs, who starts the first of a three-game suspension on Saturday, netted his second of the night on 70 minutes before missing a sitter to complete his hat-trick in the dying minutes.

Stourbridge defeated Carlton Town 4-2 in their replay and will now visit The Walks on Saturday, November 15.

“That will be a coin-flip,” said Setchell on Lynn’s next round opponents.

“They are a couple of points behind us with a game in hand in the league and we only beat them 1-0 here early in the season.”
