Norfolk Veterans Cup Semi-Final
Lynn North End Vets 4
Tavern Old Boys 1
North End supporters could be forgiven for supping a celebratory pint on Sunday night after knocking out Tavern and reaching the final for the second year in a row.
The Lynn side, featuring Linnets manager Gary Setchell, had to come from behind to beat their old Dereham rivals at Lynnsport on Sunday.
The cup holders, who are also chasing their league title, hit back to lead 2-1 at half-time after Darren Hewitt levelled.
Then former Linnets forward Simon Bush was fouled in the away box and Setchell made no mistake from the penalty spot.
In the second half Daniel Pearman netted, then Hewitt bagged his second goal to make the tie safe and beat Old Boys - a team who are one of the few to get a positive result against North End in recent years.
The final will be held at Norfolk FA’s Football Development Centre in Bowthorpe Park, Norwich, on Friday, March 27.
Manager Martyn Allen said: “Tavern were a good, organised team who were pretty physical.
“We knew that it was going to be tough as they have taken points off us.”
He added of the hosts’ display: “I didn’t think that we were at our best. In the second half we controlled the game a bit more.
“That makes us unbeaten in two years, nearly.”
Their final opponents are yet to be known as the other semi-final between Dereham Town FC Veterans and Quebec Veterans was postponed.
The Norfolk Veterans League have dominated this competition in the past few years. Lynn North End defeated Scole United 6-0 in the previous final, while in 2012-13 Quebec Veterans lifted the trophy in their first season.
