Sport - Football: DANNY OUT TO DO THE DOUBLE
King's Lynn Town FC v Blackstones
KING’S Lynn Town midfielder Danny White is determined to banish memories of the worst period of his career by helping Lynn to a league and cup double.
White endured a torrid end to last season after collapsing and being treated for viral meningitis following Lynn’s FA Vase quarter-final against Rye United.
The former Wroxham midfielder relied on his family and friends to pull him through his darkest days as he missed a vital chunk of Lynn’s season.
He returned in time to be handed a place in the game against Yaxley at the end of March before picking up severe tonsilitis at the tail end of the campaign, which ruled him out of the Norfolk Senior Cup final against Dereham Town at Carrow Road.
White said: “I just want to erase last season from my mind as it was just a nightmare and I can’t think of a better way of doing that than winning our next 16 games in the league.
“We’ve got a really good squad, but it’s important that we take one game at a time. We must keep working hard and ticking over.
“The players, supporters and owners of the club deserve a bit of success as everyone has worked so hard for it.”
Recalling his hell of last season, White said: “It really did take a lot out of me at the time. I had a lot going on in my life and I was stressed out. I played through it and perhaps didn’t help myself at times.
“I remember being very ill in hospital on the Monday and telling Gary (Setchell) that I’d be alright to play on the Tuesday night.
“That’s the type of player I am. I always give 100 per cent and Gary knows I’d play with a broken leg for the team if I had to.”
Linnets boss Gary Setchell believes tomorrow’s home League Cup tie against Cogenhoe has come at just the right time for his players.
The Walks outfit have been frozen out for the last fortnight and, with several players suffering from injury or illness, Setchell feels the club can use the game to their advantage.
Luke and Jamie Thurlbourne (flu), Jordan Yong (back) are all rated as doubtful, while Jason Turner is cup-tied for the visit of Cogenhoe, who have been re-instated in the competition after Newport Pagnell fielded an ineligible player in the last round.
Matt Hails will play in goal, giving regular shotstopper Alex Street a rest.
Setchell said: “We won’t be risking any players who are not fit as we have got two big away games in the league next week.
“We will probably play one of our strongest sides in the League Cup so far, but our priority remains winning the league.
“The League Cup is what it is and we will continue to use it to our advantage by getting minutes into players.”
