Sport - Football: Snow alert as Linnets line up a new signing
KINGS Lynn Town boss Gary Setchell hopes tomorrow’s game away at Irchester United is not affected by the weather – especially as he hopes to have a new signing in the squad.
Lynn comfortably beat Irchester 6-1 in the first game of the season, but Setchell does not intend to take the fourth-from-bottom club lightly.
He said: “We never take any games for granted in this league. We need to make sure we turn up with the right mental attitude and equip ourselves in the same way as we have recently.
“We had a really good result away at Corby last time out, so if we maintain that level of performance then I am confident that we can take all three points.
“If you take your foot off the pedal then there is a tendency in football to bring you back down to earth.
“Last season we had many games where we expected to win and didn’t apply ourselves appropriately, meaning that we came away from games very disappointed. This season has been different and we treat everything game with the same amount of importance as the last.”
The Linnets have had a week off now and Setchell says that the players are raring to get back in action.
“The lads are very keen to get back playing football. Having a week off means that they should all be fresh.
“We are in a great position and the lads know that the next two to three months are extremely important, so we need to keep on top of our game.
“We have a full squad to choose from so hopefully the weather reports change and the game can go ahead.”
Off the field, Setchell has stepped up his bid to strengthen the squad and hoped to unveil a new signing last night.
n In the Ridgeons League, Fakenham and Swaffham’s games look set to fall foul of the adverse weather conditions.
Fakenham are due to meet high-flying Whitton United at Clipbush Park, in what would be a very stiff challenge. The Ghosts lost 2-0 earlier on in the season but have picked up form recently and are currently unbeaten in 2012.
Fakenham manager Wayne Anderson said: “The game is very doubtful at the weekend. If it is off that is a problem because it would mean we wouldn’t have had a game for two weeks.
“Luckily Bircham Newton have been kind enough to let us use their sports hall, so at least the boys are making sure they stay on their toes and are sharp for the trip to Godmanchester next week.
“We could be very strong for that game as Rory (Harper) might be back so I am going to have a real headache with selection – but it’s definitely a good headache to have for a manager.”
Swaffham are set to face Ipswich Wanderers at home in what is an 11th versus 13th in the table clash.
Taking three points is essential for both clubs as they aim to propel themselves up the league standings.
The last meeting ended with the Suffolk side coming away narrow 3-2 victors, but Swaffham are in reasonably good form of late, winning two out of their last three games.
Swaffham boss Paul Hunt said: “We managed to train last week and are setting up activites for this coming week so the players keep nice and active.”
Downham definitely will not feature tomorrow as the way the fixtures fall resulted in them having a free weekend.
