LINNETS boss Gary Setchell says there is to be no departures from The Walks following the signing of Wellingborough striker Jason Turner on Thursday night.

Setchell believes the arrival of Turner leaves his squad in excellent shape as the Linnets chase a UCL League and Cup double.

Turner, 30, has had spells with a number of clubs, including Rothwell Corinthians, Rothwell Town, Kettering Town, Histon, Stamford, Grantham Town, Rugby Town, Desborough and Deeping Rangers.

Lynn now have five strikers on their books, but Setchell said: “We have good competition for places right throughout the squad and that will stand us in good stead for the remainder of the season.

“We’ve now got a squad of 19 players and nobody will be leaving. Last season we didn’t have that strength in depth and ultimately that’s what cost us our chances of winning the league.

“Yes we now have five forwards at the club, but that gives us options and also makes sure that players don’t rest on their laurels.

“If we pick up one or two injuries we’ll be down to a threadbare squad again but the players know that they are going to have to train and work hard to keep their places in the team.”

Kettering-born Turner notched 24 goals from 30 games in all competitions for the Doughboys this season.

Last season, during which he moved from Deeping Rangers to Wellingborough, saw him score 24 goals in 25 games.

The frontman has spoken of his excitement after completing his cross-league switch from the Northamptonshire side.

Turner said: “I’m really excited about joining Lynn, they are a really big club and are doing very well this year. I just hope I can come here and score the goals.

“I always seem to score against Lynn so hopefully I can now do that for them rather than against them.”

Lynn beat off competition from title rivals Long Buckby for Turner’s signature.

Turner said: “I chose Lynn ahead of Long Buckby because of the size of the club, the great amount of support they have and the quality of the stadium they play in. For me these things easily pointed me to signing for Lynn.

“At this level I know I can score goals so hopefully I can now score the goals to get them promoted which would be a huge achievement for me and the club.”

Turner scored a nine-minute hat-trick against Lynn when Wellingborough visited The Walks in December.

And he is no stranger in terms of scoring against Lynn having notched a hat-trick for Rothwell Town in their 4-3 win over the Linnets in August 2002 and another three in the pre-season friendly against Grantham in August 2006, Lynn losing 2-4.

On his new capture, Linnets boss Gary Setchell said: “Jason will give us another option up front. He’s a proven goalscorer at various levels, especially this year when he scored a hat-trick against us.

“He got 30 goals last year for Wellingborough and has already scored 21 goals in 26 appearances this season and no disrespect to Wellingborough but they are not a top side in the league.

“If you put him in our team with the other strikers we have at the club and the quality of service he will get then we know he can finish and it will give us that extra bit of firepower that we needed.

“I hope all the players play a big part for the rest of the season. Jason’s first job is to get established in the team, which I don’t expect to be easy as the other strikers won’t just roll over for him.

“He brings good competition in the striking area and it will help take the load off certain players.

Setchell added: “He is a great addition to the squad.

I went to the chairman once again and said can I bring him in? He has given me the green light for me to bring in what I think is another top-quality footballer.”
