TOWN BOSS IS WARY OF TULIPS TEST
LINNETS boss Gary Setchell has warned his side not to be fooled by Spalding United’s league position ahead of the UCL derby at The Walks tomorrow.
Lynn’s 4-0 success at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field earlier this season highlighted the enormous gulf between the two sides.
But Setchell remains wary of the mid-table Lincolnshire outfit, expected by many to be Lynn’s closest challengers for the title at the start of the campaign, who have only lost once in their last nine games.
Setchell said: “Spalding have just got a new manager and he is trying to bring a few players in, so what better place for them to come and impress him than at Lynn.
“Yes they may be well down the table but they will be doing everything possible to make a winning start.
“There’s no point feeling sorry for ourselves. We’re out of the Norfolk Senior Cup but we now have 17 league games to concentrate on.
“It’s important that we start off on the front foot and show Spalding exactly why we are top of the table.”
Setchell is confident that his side will show no signs of fatigue following their Norfolk Senior Cup exit at the hands of Norwich City on Wednesday night.
“The energy we showed for 70 minutes against Norwich City was fantastic, but in the end they ran us into the ground,” said Setchell.
“We would have trained on Thursday night, had the Norwich game gone ahead as planned on the Tuesday, so I’m expecting the players to be fine.”
Lynn have a fully-fit squad to choose from with club captain Ross Watson likely to start on the bench again after his brief 20-minute cameo against the Canaries after a nine-week injury lay-off.
Spalding appointed Pat Rayment, who succeeds former Linnet Andrew Stanhope, as their new manager last Friday.
He has wasted no time in trying to strengthen the Tulips’ inconsistant squad.
Seven day notices of approach have gone in for Deeping defender Spencer Tinkler, Boston Town winger Shane Clancy and Sleaford Town hitman Liam Tunstall, while a high-profile striker is also being chased.
Rayment said: “Approaches have gone in for a few players and I’m hopeful we’ll have a few announcements to make before the Lynn game. The club as a whole needs a confidence boost and hopefully we can give everybody a lift.”
On his side’s trip to West Norfolk, an unfazed Rayment said: “It couldn’t have been much harder really. But we’ve got 11 games left to play, including the current top eight teams. “It’s my job to instil a bit of confidence in the squad and we’ll certainly go there without fear.
“The lads have a good opportunity to show me what they’re made of. It’s a unique atmosphere for the UCL and a good pitch to play on.”
Tom James (suspended) and Ryan O’Loughlin (unavailable) will miss the trip for Spalding.
