Hunger stIll burns in Tom
LYNN Stars speedway skipper Tomas Topinka remains hungry for success on the eve of the new season.
After a trophyless 2008, the veteran campaigner is eyeing more silverware as he embarks on his 13th season in Lynn colours.
Speaking at Wednesday's press and practice night, Topinka, who will again spearhead Lynn's 2009 challenge, said: "We're hoping to have a good year and it would be nice to get some more trophies as we were unlucky to miss out last season.
"Personally I'm raring to go and everything is in place. I've worked harder than I ever have before and I feel good.
"Everybody in our team has the potential to improve their averages and I know we will entertain."
Topinka first rode for Lynn in 1993 and has been virtually an ever-present fixture in the Norfolk Arena team since Lynn began life in the Premier League back in 2003.
Speedway Star columnists have predicted that the Lynn Stars will win the Premier League, while promoter Buster Chapman was not afraid to talk up Lynn's chances in the months ahead.
Chapman said: "I certainly think we'll finish in the top four and I'd be very disappointed if we didn't.
"I think it will be another exciting season and don't think there will ever be a dull moment.
"Some of the riders we've got in the team are exciting. If it all runs without injuries and problems like that I think we can do really well."
Lynn's 2009 line-up has a new-look about it with only Kozza Smith and Topinka remaining from last season's campaign.
Joining them in the team are the experienced trio of Christian Henry, Emiliano Sanchez and Chris Schramm, while the arrival of youngsters Jan Graversen and Darcy Ward gives the Stars' side a youthful feel about it.
competitive
Team boss Rob Lyon said: "It's a very competitive Premier League this season, but our aim, as always, will be to go out, entertain and try and win everything."
Lyon believes Lynn's strength-in-depth can pay dividends – just as it did for reigning Premier League champions Edinburgh last season.
"We looked at several possible line-ups and wanted to keep hold of both Kevin (Doolan) and Tomas, but having both of them in took us fractionally over the points limit," said Lyon.
"It was disappointing, but then we looked at how Edinburgh put their team together last season and how it worked for them.
"One of the teams allowed us to have Darcy Ward and Jan Graversen at reserve, and Keith and Jonathan (Chapman) and myself felt that was a good starting point.
