JOHNSON QUITS IN CASH ROW

LINNETS assistant manager Andy Johnson sensationally quit the club this week, claiming The Walks outfit owe him 'a considerable sum of money'.

Former Norwich City favourite Johnson (35) is now threatening the club with legal action to recoup money he says he is owed from as far back as last season.

"They have been taking advantage of me," the ex-Welsh international told the Lynn News yesterday.

"They owe me a lot of money from last season that they kept promising to pay, and my wages have been short this season. I'm not putting up with it any more."

Club chairman Ken Bobbins was not available for comment when we tried to contact him yesterday, and other club officials were remaining tight-lipped.

Johnson – who once commanded a 2.2 million transfer fee – claimed he took a voluntary pay cut this season to help the club out, even though he had a year left on his contract. He also claimed he had waived other conditions of his deal with the Linnets.

"It's not about the money, it's about the principle," said the Worcester-based Johnson, who initially joined Lynn as a player in January, before hanging up his boots in the summer.

"I could have signed for a league club closer to home but chose a 300-mile round trip to Lynn as I thought they were a decent club that was going forwards."

Johnson paid tribute to Lynn manager Carl Heggs and said he had loved the footballing side of the club. "Carl was doing great things here and we had high hopes for the future."

Heggs said of Johnson: "He is a great lad and I enjoyed working with him – but now I have got to move on and give someone else the oppor-tunity."

The Linnets boss said he has someone in mind who has experience at Conference level.
