Linnets boss Webb resigns

LINNETS management team Keith Webb and Lee Glover have left The Walks.

The duo confirmed their departure of the crisis club after Saturday's final match of the Conference Blue Square North season, which Lynn won 3-1 at Vauxhall Motors.

The news follows last week's shock announcement by the Conference that the club would be relegated, subject to appeal, for failing ground standards.

A statement on the club website said: "After the match it was announced that manager Keith Webb and assistant Lee Glover would be stepping down with immediate effect.

"Keith Webb took charge of the Linnets on December 19, 2006 and took Lynn to the play-offs at the end of the 2006-07 season and then promotion to the Conference North the following year.

"In total he took charge of 136 competitive matches, the longest someone has stayed in the hot seat since Peter Morris who was manager between 1995-98.

"The club wishes him and Lee Glover best wishes for the future. "

Webb has no other job in football at present, but he said of the decision: "In the end no, it wasn't a difficult decision.

"I don't want to talk about it at the moment.

"I want to wait and let the dust settle, and look at it in the cold light of day rather than when I'm emotional. I want to let it lie for a while."

He was pleased that his last game in the hot seat, and the club's final game of their debut Conference North campaign, came with a win.

Webb added: "It's something we wanted to stress before the game, we didn't want to end it with a defeat.

"I wanted to go out with a win, and I'm obviously happy that we did. We played well. The boys didn't let me down.

"We didn't have the best start, with the accident on the M56 making us late.

"It makes you wonder if you get a better response preparing for games in that way!

"We started well and played as well as we've played all season."

The club will not announce a decision on a replacement for at least a few days.

Lynn Reserves manager Steve Lilley said: "Keith was very supportive throughout the season, we spoke daily about players.

"To do the Reserves team manager's job, you need to have that relationship.

"It's a big blow. I saw it coming – it wasn't out of the blue.

"Football needs continuity and stability in order to achieve. If you've got a Reserves and youth set up beneath the first team, you need continuity.

"Things aren't built in a day, you need a three-four-five year plan. From that respect, I wanted Keith to stay, but that's the nature of football.

"The first team manager's very much results-orientated, which I'm sure had some impact on the decision.

"The new manager may want to bring in his own team, or it may depend on the club whether they want me to do the job any more.

"I've got to chat with the chairman and see where they want to go."

Lynn chairman Ken Bobbins yesterday was meeting borough council chief executive Ray Harding regarding the club's appeal over their demotion by the Conference.
