long trophy trip for Linnets
FA Carlsberg Trophy
By Peter Woodhouse
THE Linnets for the second round running have been drawn against a team from their own league – but they face a long north west trip to Workington.
This game in Cumbria is in the first round proper on Saturday, December 13, where the winners get 5,000.
Ironically the previous week, on Saturday, December 6, Lynn go to Workington for a Blue Square North fixture. Last weekend Lynn went through by beating Stafford Rangers – who will come to The Walks for a league game next Saturday.
Although it means another 200 mile-plus trip to pencil into The Walks outfit’s 2008-09 season road map, Lynn boss Keith Webb was philosophical about the draw.
He said: “We could have had a lot worse. We’ve got to deal with it.
“It’s a funny situation: Stafford have had to come over to us twice in a week, now in the next round we’ve got to do the same at Workington.”
Lynn did not manage to draw a big name from the Blue Square Premier, whose clubs entered at this stage.
But their opponents are below the Linnets in the table, although Lynn have yet to play them this season.
Webb added: “We’re looking at it as a game that, if we do it right, we can win it. It’s a cup game and anything can happen.
“I’m not too unhappy about it. My priority at the moment is the Stafford game on Saturday, that’s what I and we have got to concentrate on.”
Former Football League club Workington put out Blue Square North front-runners Tamworth 1-0 on Saturday.
Lynn have a poor record in long Trophy journeys at the likes of Barnstaple, Bangor, Morecambe, Weymouth, Dover and Bishop Auckland
John Turner went off on Saturday with a tight hamstring, but is expected to recover. Webb will be looking to put in around three first-teamers for the Reserves’ re-arranged Norfolk Senior Cup clash at Norwich United tonight.
Jack Defty and Andrew Fisk need game time after returning from suspension.
