Lyon's warning
Lynn Stars hope to move up the speedway British Premier League table when they face third-placed Rye House Rockets at the Norfolk Arena tonight.
The Stars have slipped to fifth since their last league meeting two weeks ago and team manager Rob Lyon believes this match will be tough, with the Rockets' reserves holding the key.
He said: "The reason we beat Rye House in the Premier Trophy by over 20 points was because our reserves outscored their's by 18 points to one. Fast forward nearly three months later and Darcy has now moved to number one in our team and for them Tommy Allen has moved to reserve.
"Rye House are in fact one of the few teams in the league with stronger reserves on paper than our own, and Andrew Silver will be a much sharper rider and more race fit than he was on his last visit."
Another interesting dimension to the meeting is the clash between rival Swedes Linus Eklof and Linus Sundstrum. Eklof said: "Linus is rated highly and well liked in the UK, we know each other well and I know he had a good meeting at Lynn earlier in the season, so I'm looking forward to racing against him."
Guesting at number three for the Rockets in place of the injured Joe Haines is Scunthorpe's Carl Wilkinson. Explaining his choice of guest, Rockets' team manager John Sampford said: "Carl had a super meeting at Lynn two weeks ago - his return of 10 points included a very impressive win over Darcy Ward.
"There really was no better choice of guest we could have gone for and if Chris Neath can find his form, then I believe we can get one of our best ever results at Lynn!"
With the Rockets operating rider replacement at number two in place of the injured Robert Mear, it will give their team manager a pick of any rider to use at least once.
Stars' promoter Buster Chapman is looking forward to the meeting. He said: "For quite a few years we have reigned supreme over Rye House, but this time round they have made an excellent choice of guest and I can see some potential in their team to come here and do very well.
"I will warn Rob to put the riders on full alert as I don't want us to slip up. We are out to win this year's league and we must start climbing back up the table now.
"If we can get this win and secure some points away at Glasgow on Sunday, then we will hopefully be in a position to go top of the league by next Wednesday."
Stars: 1 Darcy Ward 9.45, 2 Linus Eklof 7.00, 3 Emiliano Sanchez 6.79, 4 Chris Schramm 8.14, 5 Tomas Topinka 9.08, 6 Kozza Smith 5.38, 7 Jan Graversen 3.95.
Rye House: 1 Chris Neath 7.90, 2 Rider Replacement 7.79, 3 Carl Wilkinson 7.02, 4 Luke Bowen 6.10, 5 Linus Sundstrom 6.62, 6 Tommy Allen 4.85, 7 Andrew Silver 5.10.
Tomas Topinka and Darcy Ward were pipped at the post in the Premier League Pairs final at Somerset on Friday.
The Stars duo, among the favourites for the title, were edged out in the semi-final.
Lynn finished top of Group 1 on 24 points (Topinka 14, Ward 10) ahead of Somerset 23 and Scunthorpe 20; in Group 2, Workington raced away to 27 points from Birmingham 19 and Edinburgh 17.
But there was disaster for Ward when he was disqualified in the semi-final race against Birmingham after Jason Lyons went into the fence, and the Brummies went through. In the other semi-final, Somerset beat Workington.
Because of the track curfew time, there wasn't time for Lynn and Workington to race in the consolation final. The Comets were awarded third place because of their better score in the group stages.
In the final, there was a surprise as Birmingham beat home club Somerset.
