Memories from Vanguards FC

LYNN News reader and Linnets fan Jim Hill, from Middleton, sent in a picture and a couple of old articles concerning Vanguards FC (see page 103 today's paper).

Playing in Division Three of the Lynn Sunday League in the late 1960s, Vanguards had not won a point in the league and were rock bottom before Mr Hill took over as manager, coach and trainer.

After helping them finish one place higher, the team took the division by storm the next season with a hat-trick from Geoff Mallett against Suntester, clinching the title and completing an amazing transformation.

Hill gives some words of praise to Geoff Mallett, Dave Uppington and a few other players he signed after gaining promotion, who are not in the picture.

Pictured (back from left): Usher, Rushton, Batson, B. Collinson and Troughton. Front: Brown, Taylor, Dave Hill (mascot), G. Boardman, Twell and Crake. Missing from the photo is H. Fidom.
