West Norfolk Junior Badminton players won all the titles at the Norfolk Schools Association under 14 championships in Norwich last weekend.

Charlie Wakefield from Feltwell won all three titles, with Jessi Bateman from Dersingham taking home two.

Charlie, 13, won the boys’ singles, in the biggest event of the day. Split into six groups, Charlie won his group, as did younger brother, Harry Wakefield and Reece Law from Downham. They were joined in the second round top section by Luc Widdowson, Leo Fonzo and Alfie Brown who all finished second in their respective groups.

Cole Fowler and David Flannigan went into the plate competition after the first round, with Cole winning one of his matches.

The top section was split into four groups with the winners contesting the semi-finals. The Wakefield brothers reached the semis, but Reece was unlucky not to join them, missing out by a point.

Harry lost his semi, but Charlie won by 21-8, then won the final 21-11 against Norwich’s Aruneesh Velu.

In the girls’ singles, Jaime Street from Mundford and Abigail Flannigan from Downham did very well playing in their first-ever county competition. But the title was won by 13 year-old Jessi Bateman. She won her initial group comfortably, followed by both games in the next round, defeating Norwich’s Molly Crombie 21-10 in the final.

Jessi and regular partner, Caitlin Parfitt dominated the girls’ doubles, winning all their matches in straight games. In the boys’ doubles, Charlie played with Aruneesh, and Harry partnered Louis Davis, with both pairs winning their respective groups, and were joined in the semis by Reece and Leo who finished runners-up in theirs.

Charlie and Aruneesh proved too strong for Reece and Leo, winning 21-14, and faced younger brother Harry, with Louis, in the final after they also won their semi.

But older brother Charlie won the family battle, 21-13, 21-11, for his second title. In the mixed doubles, Charlie took his third title, paired with Caitlin, defeating brother Harry for a second time in the deciding match.
