David takes long jump honours at EVAC meeting

He won the M50 long jump, was placed second in 400m hurdles – a first time at this event – and was third in both the hammer and 100m.

His winning M50 relay team mates had also acquitted themselves well individually.

Tony Savage and Pete Johnson won the M50 and M60 mile races and Malcolm Tuff ran within 0.5 seconds of the club record in the 400m.

Keith Morris also competed in the M50s, picking up third places in both the pole vault and shot putt.

Jeff Reed, in his first competitive outing since having a double cataract removal, was second in the M60 shot, long jump and 100m.

Paul Firmage, the only other M60 competitor for Ryston, contested the 1,000m walk, with Martin Simmonds providing the B string in that event.

Paul Harrison (wins in 100m and long jump, third in shot) and Che Plant (first in 400m, mile and 400m hurdles) comprised the M35-49 team, joined by Keith and Jeff to place second in the relay.

Tanya Daniels dominated the W35 competition with wins in shot, long jump and 400m hurdles.

She was joined in the W35 relay by Helen Melville (W35 mile), Linda Marshall ( W50 400m and mile) and Gaye Clarke (W50, wins in shot, hammer and 300m hurdles).

Team manager Helen Reed made her competitive debut in the league and in the hammer event, scoring maximum points for the team in the W35 category.

Marlene Simmonds cleaned up in the W60 shot, long jump and 300m hurdles.

Jane Ashby, the only other W60 competitor, took maximum points in the mile and a third place in the 100m.

She was joined in the W50 relay by Karen Wood (second in 100m and long jump), Sue Smith (fourth 1,000m walk and second in 400m) and Liz Blakie (first 1,000m walk).
