Three West Norfolk schools won through to the county round of the Badminton England Center Parcs National Badminton Schools Championships held at the Sportspark in Norwich last week.
Downham Academy’s under 16 boys team was the big success, winning all matches in their event, and only dropping two games.
The team comprised Daniel Hughes, Jacob White, Daniel Goodenough and Hayden Revell and reserve Will Perry, and will now represent Norfolk at the regional round in Essex next month, where the winners will then attend the national finals at Center Parcs Sherwood Forest in May.
Downham’s U14 boys, represented by Joe Rolfe, Daniel Brown, Leo Fonzo and Ryan Shinn, nearly joined them in the regional round. After winning three matches, they lost to a strong Thorpe St Andrew High School to finish runners-up. Springwood High School’s U14 boys did very well against several county players to win one match and finish fourth.
Springwood’s girls also just missed out in both age groups, finishing runners-up in both the U14 and U16 events. The U14 girls (Jessica Bateman, Phoebe Claxton, Erin Williamson and Emma Harvey) easily won two matches but fell short against regular winners Thorpe St Andrew winning only one game. The U16 girls, Penny Carter, Louisa Claxton, Lydia Appleton and Kate Beadle, had a battle for second place in their group. Having lost to Wymondham College, they managed to defeat Aylsham by 3-2, with only one point between them!
