West Norfolk Junior Badminton player, 14-year-old Joe Rolfe from Downham, has been doing well in national tournaments, winning several medals in various different events.

His biggest success came in the Northamptonshire under 15 bronze tournament at the end of the year, where he and his partner Jack Rickward won gold in the boys doubles.

Daniel Hughes, also from Downham, and his partner just missed out on the final, winning three matches in the group, only losing to Rolfe and Rickward.

After winning all their games in the group Rolfe/Rickward then took the title, taking the final 21-15.

Both Rolfe and Hughes won bronze medals in the singles, after winning their respective groups and quarter finals, but losing out in the semi-finals.

Rolfe has continued his good form in 2015, where he has won medals in three more national tournaments.

At the Suffolk U15 bronze, he won silver in the boy’s doubles, having won all five games in the group.

He and his partner, Patrick Arundel, won their semi and only just lost in the final by 21-17.

Then playing in a higher age group, the U17 bronze event in Luton, Rolfe played with James Salter from Norwich, and the pair won bronze against strong opposition.

Having won their group to reach the semi, they only just missed the final, losing 22-20 to the eventual winners. Rolfe also reached the quarter-finals in the singles.

Back in Suffolk, in the U15 silver grade event, Rolfe won bronze in the singles after winning his group and reaching the semis, where he only just lost 13-15, 15-9, 13-15.

In the boy’s doubles, he and his partner, James Moreton-Smith, went through to the knockout stages, after winning three out of their four group matches.

In the semi they lost to the eventual winners, then unfortunately just missed out on another medal after losing the third/fourth place play off by 16-14 in the deciding game.
