Downham went into Saturday in the Dipple & Conway Norfolk Alliance Premier against Fakenham with high hopes after winning two on the bounce, but the visitors won by one wicket.

With Downham skipper Yates winning the toss and batting, the hosts’ good feeling continued.

Downham were able to set a target of 297 to win; a total they felt at the halfway point would be sufficient to win.

The Downham innings was built around a brilliant 98 not out from Ian Harrison, who was ably supported by Yates (87) and some hard hitting at the end from Nick Kelly (28) and Addam Todd (31).

The Fakenham side came out after the break with an aggressive attitude with South African, Chad Bowes (pictured), racing to 44 in no time. Fakenham reached 100 with just 14 overs gone but started to lose wickets at regular intervals. Monaghan-Fairlie went for 57 and Downham began to get on top.

Downham were however left to rue a host of missed chances as Blackiston made 36 despite being dropped seven times. He and Marshall (35) put on 63 which proved to be crucial in the final result.

When Joss Stuart, who bowled well for his three wickets, got Marshall caught, Downham again believed they had won it, but Ashley Jarvis then came to the crease.

Despite Todd (4 for 51) taking two wickets in the final overs it was left to Jarvis (45 not out) to win the game for Fakenham with nine balls and a wicket to spare.

Downham were again disappointed to come out on the wrong side of another close and great game of cricket.
