West Norfolk Junior Badminton’s Joe Rolfe (14) has scored his biggest national success so far this season at the East London Under 15 bronze level event in Essex.
Joe, from Downham, won the boys singles title in a strong field, which involved players from all over the South, including Sussex, Herts, Beds, Kent and many more.
There were 14 initial groups in the boy’s singles, with each winner progressing through to the elimination rounds.
Joe comfortably won all his group games by 21-6, 21-16 and 21-5, then won the first knock out round match 21-18. The quarter-final was surprisingly easier, with Joe winning 21-8.
But then in the semi-finals, he played Harry Wang from Kent and found himself 10-16 down at one point, but dug deep to level the match and eventually take it in setting by 23-21.
With the entry of 52 boys down to the last two, Joe met Connor Strudwick from Surrey in a tight final. Having survived a close match in the semis seemed to give Joe the edge and he won the title with a 21-16 victory.
Joe then played in the boy’s doubles with Raymon Ramakrishnan from Essex, and despite having never even met before, the boys won their group and reached the quarter final. However, they lost 21-15 and just missed out on the bronze medal play-off.
