Gallow Ladies, Fakenham, have had a very busy time over the past week.
The A team entertained Acle A, one of the top teams in the county, in a Triples League game. Gallow rarely gain points in this particular fixture but this match was different than expected.
Gallow blocks skipped by Beryl Graver and Coralie Bell ended worthy winners and Pam Whitehead’s block drew. Sadly, Louise Hannant’s rink could not complete the whitewash but the six and a half to one and a half points victory was very welcome.
The same team travelled to Norfolk Bowling Club, the current league leaders, but they managed just one point from this encounter, Cheryl Lincoln, Mollie Bowyer and Whitehead securing the only win.
With just two matches remaining in the league, Gallow stay in second place but Acle, North Walsham and County Arts are close behind, with games in hand.
The next round of the Mason KO Cup was played against County Arts, from Norwich, on Friday. Winning this game meant that Gallow would reach the last 16 of a national competition that started with 276 teams, so the stakes were high.
The home block started very strongly and after five ends were 10 shots to 1 up.
They managed to maintain this advantage throughout the game and ended with a 13-shot lead (23 shots to 10).
The away block did not start so well and were 1-7 down but with some outstanding bowling from skip Pam Whitehead the score was kept tight, in the end losing by just six shots.
The overall score was a brilliant win for Gallow by 35 shots to 28.
Team: Ann Leverett, Josie Wright, Sandra Burlingham, Coralie Bell, Cheryl Lincoln, Irene Lambert, Mollie Bowyer and captain Pam Whitehead. Colchester are the next opponents on Thursday, March 2, starting at 1.30pm. Support would be welcome.
The Ladies B team played their last fixture of the season at home against league leaders Roundwood B. From the outset victory was never in doubt with three of the four blocks performing very strongly.
The match ended with a resounding win for Gallow 75 shots to 30 and seven points was added to the tally. Hopefully this will be enough to see the team move up into second place in the table.
Rink scores: Mavis Lewis, Marie Frost, Rosie Noon won 21-8; Carol Playford, Helen Hodson, Rita Goold won 28-3; Bridget Beckham, Eileen Ledgerwood, Kathy Shepherd lost 7-12; Jen Simmons-Brack, Roz Sparkes, Gina Horne won 19-7.
Team captain Marie Frost was very pleased with the result and the enthusiasm shown by all the players throughout the season.
