The Gallow Indoor Bowls Club, Fakenham, Ladies ‘A’ team completed their fixtures in the County Triples League, last Saturday, with a home game against Diss ‘A’.
The away fixture had ended in defeat but the team turned this around with the advantage of playing on the home green. Three blocks were ahead at the halfway stage but the block of Jo Ashmore, Josie Wright and Beryl Graver were well adrift; however their tenacity prevailed and from this point on Diss did not score another shot and the Gallow block won 17-10. The final result was an 8 points to 0 win.
Other rink scores: Ann Leverett, Sandra Burlingham, Coralie Bell 17-5; Pam Frary, Maureen Leverett, Louise Hannant, 14-10; Cheryl Lincoln, Mollie Bowyer, Irene Lambert 17-8.
The final league tables have not yet been finalised but a top three finish is possible; if so this will be the best result for several years.
Eight of the team played Colchester IBC in the last 16 of the Mason, a national team competition. Expectations were high as a crowd gathered at Gallow and Leverett, Wright, Burlingham and Bell did not disappoint. They started well, as they have in all previous rounds, and after 10 ends led by six shots, which they were able to maintain to the end winning 17-11.
The away block were just a shot behind at the same point; unfortunately they then dropped eight shots on two of the next four ends. But the team of Lincoln, Lambert, Bowyer and Pam Whitehead really dug in and at the end their score was 15-16. The overall aggregate score was a brilliant win for Gallow by 32 shots to 27.
The quarter-finals are on Friday, March 24 against St Neots IBC. As in previous rounds this match will be played with one block at Gallow and one at St Neots.
Gallow Mens ‘A’ captain, Danny Cawthorne, has had a very successful campaign in this year’s Federation Singles competitions. He defeated Dan Mills in both the final of the Singles and the final of the Under-25 Singles. Danny will now represent Norfolk at the national finals at Newark in April.
Gallow’s Malcolm Starkey has also reached the national finals (last 16) in the Mens Over 60s Singles of the prestigeous EBA competitions. Following six gruelling rounds he had an easy win over Clive Derry from County Arts in the area finals, 21 shots to 9. Malcolm will now play in the final stages at Nottingham on April 14/15.
