Time is running out for West Norfolk Sports Awards winner and former Downham High School pupil Oliver Kenny to reach his world championship dream.
The deaf swimmer (17) was a fortnight ago named as the winner of the Disabled Sports Person of the Year at the KLFM West Norfolk Sports Awards. He has been selected for August’s deaf world championships in San Antonio, Texas, but is ineligible for funding.
UK Sport’s funding does not include elite deaf sports; only the Olympics and Paralympics. The teenager needs to raise £3,000 for the Stateside trip.
His mother Amanda from Watlington is also manager of the West Norfolk Deaf Association, which is trying to raise the cash through its 100 club.
He began at Downham Swimming Club and now swims for UEA (Norwich).
