Pelicans Men 1st XI 5

Brentwood Men 3

Pelicans ended 2014 with another win at home against Brentwood; however this one certainly won’t go down as a vintage performance from the home side.

They found themselves seemingly cruising at 2-0 in the first half only for two defensive errors to cost them before they managed to soak up a lot of second half pressure to secure the win.

Pelicans’ opener came thanks to a superbly placed shot from Seth Walpole who gave the keeper no chance after being set up by Lankfer.

Lankfer himself then doubled his team’s advantage after he stole the ball from a Brentwood defender and finished well.

Despite the scoreline the visitors had played some good hockey and had threatened an inexperienced defence.

Major, Batterham and Hall were kept busy and had to be well supported by Frost, Walpole, Kerry, Sheerin and Dowers.

Aldous pulled off some superb saves but he was helpless when firstly Hall and then Major failed to clear the ball from their own goal line which gave easy tap-ins to Brentwood players.

Despite this Pelicans regrouped and just before half-time took the lead again from a Simons short corner which seemed to go right through the goalkeeper.

Pelicans really had to defend well in the second half as Brentwood pushed for an equaliser and then possibly the win but with the added reassurance of Iain Page returning to 1st XI hockey they seemed a lot more calmer on the ball and dealt with everything Brentwood had.

They were then rewarded for their improved defensive display when Sheerin broke up another attack before finding Simons who once again proved to be clinical in front of goal.

They sealed victory soon after as Lankfer notched his second of the game after some superb work from Henry Frost in the build-up.

Despite a late consolation from Brentwood, Pelicans were able to hold out for victory, while 2014 will be remembered as a memorable year for the men’s section at Pelicans HC.
