However the first order of the evening was to present the Excel Appeal (Excellence in Elderly Care) and the Dementia Fund of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Searles 2015 captains’ charities, with a cheque for £5,000 (£4,355 for the appeal and £645 for dementia).

The superb amount was raised from Captains Day, Gala Day in late May and the 100-hole challenge as well as other events in 2015.

Captain Rob Hills said: “I am delighted we have raised such a great amount this year and all whilst having fun doing so!”

Laurence Morlaàs, Queen Elizabeth Hospital fundraising executive, added: “We are so grateful to the three captains, Edward, all the players and everyone who helped raised such an impressive amount.”

Searles Golf manager Edward Howes announced that Hills was elected men’s captain, Margaret Kent ladies captain and Mike Trebbick seniors captain.

Also elected were the new handicap committee, consisting of Esme Corner, Keith Whiting and Barry Smith. The charity for 2016 will be Norfolk Accident Rescue Service.

l As part of the outgoing captains summary of 2015, Heacham Manor presented Morlaàs a cheque for £2,015 for the Excel Appeal – Excellence in Elderly Care.

This amount had been raised in 2015 through fun events such as Captains Day, Seniors Open and Ladies Invitational.

Morlaàs added: “I am thrilled as this donation, coupled with the other from the Searles Resort Golf & Country Club will buy a digital reminiscence therapy software package to support our patients who have dementia.”

Aaron Daly will continue as men’s captain and Rachel Hodgkinson as ladies captain. With no seniors captain a number of match captains have volunteered to take over the running of matches against other clubs.

l Searles holds a free junior golf day on Monday, April 4.
