West Norfolk Junior Badminton player, Joe Rolfe, from the Downham Junior club, became triple county champion at the Norfolk Under 15 championships.
Rolfe (14) dominated the boy’s singles event, despite strong Norwich opposition. Both he and Daniel Hughes, also from Downham, won both games in the initial group stage. Sam Thorpe from Lynn and Charlie Wakefield (11) from Feltwell only just missed out on the semi-finals, after winning one game and only just losing the other.
Hughes faced the top seed in the semi, losing a close match 22-20, 21-17, whereas Rolfe easily won his semi, and also the final by 21-9, 21-14.
Rolfe and Hughes in the boys doubles raced through their group, and got a bye into the final, defeating strong Norwich pair Hyde and Taylor 21-10, 21-17. Wakefield and Norwich partner Aruneesh Velu, both playing up an age group, did very well to win a group game.
In the girls singles, West players Louisa Claxton, Jessica Alder and Phoebe Claxton all won one group game but Jessica Bateman (11) won her group to reach the quarter-finals.
In the girls doubles, Bateman and Caitlin Parfitt (Norwich) surprised their much older opposition by comfortably winning their group, then defeating Norwich’s Copley and Davis 21-16, 21-18.
Rolfe won his third title of the day in the mixed doubles, partnering Alder. Daniel Hughes and partner Rachel Copley also won their groups. Charlie Wakefield and Jessica Bateman only just missed out.
Rolfe/Alder won a close three-set semi against Hughes/Copley, and then won the final, again in three close games, to complete a successful championships for West players.
