West Norfolk Junior Badminton member Joe Rolfe has won several medals at recent national under-17 tournaments.

Joe, 15, from Downham, is personally sponsored by Top Spin Tennis.

The first tournament success came in the bronze level event in Essex, where he reached the quarter-finals in the singles and won a silver medal as runner-up in the doubles.

In the singles event, he came top of his group in the initial stage, but lost to a player ranked a grade above him 21-12 in the last eight.

In the doubles, playing with his regular Norfolk partner James Salter, the pair easily won their group to progress to the semi-finals, defeating a Surrey/Sussex pair 21-16 to reach the final.

Despite being ahead at one stage, Rolfe and Salter pushed the Berkshire/Sussex pair all of the way to setting, narrowly missing out on the gold medal, losing 20-22.

Rolfe’s next tournament was another bronze level in Worcester, where he did even better, winning silver in the singles and bronze in the doubles.

After winning all games in the group stage, he met the top seed from Avon in the quarter-finals.

Even though he is a grade lower than the Avon player, Rolfe stayed calm, despite being 20-18 down at one point, to defeat his opponent by the narrowest margin 23-21.

The semi-final was also a tight match, but Rolfe won by 21-17 to reach the final.

Surprisingly, there he met his friend and partner James Salter to set up an all-Norfolk final, but the Norwich player just edged the match 21-15.

The pair teamed up for the doubles, and easily won all their group matches to reach the semi-finals, where they were very unlucky not to reach the final, losing to a Staffordshire partnership by just 20-22 to win the bronze medals.
