Report by Blair Rule
On a breezy but dry Sunday morning at King’s Lynn Golf Club, new club captain Blair Rule and Ladies captain Sally Bettinson commenced their year in office with the now traditional Drive In ceremony.
After a brief warm up in the newly opened driving range, both players hit successful drives with Bettinson driving 162 years and Rule 234 yards.
More than 150 members of the Castle Rising-based club had estimated how far each drive would go with the closest winning a prize donated by each captain.
Basil Calaby was the closest for Rule’s drive and a tie between Charles Curtis and Terry Hornsby for Bettinson’s drive forced a single shot putting competition to win Sally’s prize which was won by Curtis.
After the drive in, 56 members played a 18 hole greensomes event.
This was won by Anne Ellis and Carl Purdy with 43 points, just beating Paul Corbyn and Daniel Davenport who scored 42points.
The captains’ charities that will benefit from the event and others throughout the year are the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support.
l The outgoing KLGC Ladies captain, Maggie Clarkson, held her last ladies day on February 21, the Captain’s Farewell, which was a lovely day for golf.
The ladies turned out in good numbers to play in the competition, which was a 9 holes greensomes stableford.
After play the ladies congregated in the clubhouse for the presentation of the prizes.
The winners were: Front 9 holes – 1st Pat Simpson/Helen Marsters 21 points, 2nd Anne Ellis/Margaret Doubleday 19pts.
Back 9 holes: 1st Fan Brown/Karen Freezer 20pts, 2nd Mary Wilson/Di Gould 17pts.
Nearest pin on the 5th Soon Letchford and 16th Karen Freezer.
