Bishop’s Stortford 2
Pelicans Men’s 1st XI 3
Pelicans returned to winning ways on Saturday albeit not due to a vintage performance.
Missing some important players and then having a car of players arriving late wasn’t ideal preparation, meaning team manager Charlie Lankfer had to start on the left hand side of midfield.
The home side jumped on this and took an early lead following a fast flowing move.
They nearly made it 2-0 soon afterwards but a well struck shot cannoned off Aldous’s post.
Pelicans however began to find their feet and started to look assured going forward and the equaliser came thanks to Seth Walpole who followed up superbly from a short corner by Simons which had been well blocked.
The game was opening up now with both teams looking good going forward and the home side retook the lead after a shot deflected in off Allsop.
Once again Pelicans equalised and this time it was thanks to a superb move down the left hand side. Allsop found Dowers whose cross missed Simons but found Lankfer who at full stretch made it 2-2.
The rest of the half was dominated by Pelicans. Major had oceans of space to move up from right back and linked up really well with Kerry and Henry but Pelicans found themselves level at the break.
The second half saw more of the same with both teams looking threatening.
At the back for Pelicans Page, Allsop, Sheerin and Major all pulled off goal saving challenges and Aldous pulled off what turned out to be match-winning saves including one with his head.
Lankfer bagged the match winner after being played in by Page; his well struck shot across the keeper nestled in the far corner.
Stortford pushed for an equaliser but Pelicans held on.
