Dereham 2nd 2

Pelicans followed up last week’s victory with another draw, this time at home to fellow mid table side Dereham.

Having won the reverse fixture comfortably, Pelicans were hopeful of a similar result, however since then the visitors have pulled clear of relegation and like Pelicans will have another season of Division 2N hockey next season.

It was the home side who started the better and took an early lead with a superbly worked team goal. Firstly Iain Page found Otto Esse with a brilliant pass from his own D into the Dereham half.

Esse beat two defenders before finding Widdowson in the Dereham D who at full stretch expertly guided the ball past the goalkeeper.

Dereham came straight back at their hosts and caused problems for Major, Page, Dowers and Page in the back four. They dealt well with the initial onslaught, as did goalkeeper Green against his old club, however they were caught out before half time by the high ball which beat the defence and gave Dereham a tap-in after their front two rounded Green.

The second half was a scrappy affair of few chances. The midfield of Esse, Brown, Walpole, Collingwood-Smith and Sheerin worked hard to provide chances for Frost and Widdowson up front but the away side defended well, or in the case of Frost, found the goalkeeper in good form.

Dereham broke quickly but once again the Page brothers did a good job of sweeping their attacks up.

Chris Page gave his side the lead again thanks to a well struck short corner which was well won by the hard working Esse who put in some real hard yards for the entire game and was a constant threat with his pace and skill.

Pelicans weren’t able to take the three points as a turnover in midfield gave Dereham the chance to break with speed before a cross across the face of goal was tucked away for an equaliser. Despite throwing everything at Dereham with chances for their front two, Pelicans weren’t able to grab a late winner.

Tomorrow, Pelicans face the long trip to face Ipswich East Suffolk looking to complete the double over them.
