A hot sunny day greeted the athletes for the second Eastern Young Athletes’ League match at Peterborough.

West Norfolk athletes compete in this league as a combined team with other athletes from Norfolk’s smaller rural clubs.

Leading the way by quite some distance was Lucy Koenigsberger who threw the hammer an enormous 49.85m. Not only did this win by 20 metres, but it was the second longest in the UK this year in this age group.

Koenigsberger went on to win the shot in 10.29m. Abigail Rice ran her favourite event, the 100m in 13.5, getting close to her best and threw 11.82m in the Javelin.

Under 15 boy Charlie Williams jumped 5.15m in the long jump for third and ran well in the 200m (25.6) and 300m (41.1). Nathan Smalls was just outside his best in the 100m (12.7) and performed well in the 200m (26.3). Alfie Williams collected PBs in javelin (19.70m), shot (10.82m) and discus (20.87m). Mason Higby also managed a fine PB in the shot, 11.93m and discus (32.89m). Arthur Knight threw a big hammer PB in 21.67m and 17.79m in the discus.

Harry Knight in the U17 age group threw 25.50m in the hammer, 17.74m in the discus and 10.46m in the shot.

U13 girl Amber Scott ran a great PB and placed second in the A string 100m (14.1) and added PBs in long jump (3.94m, 2nd overall) and shot (7.14m 2nd). U13 boy Joe Williams ran 13.8 for 4th in the 100m and 27.3 in the 200m placing second in the B string event, adding 19.64m in the javelin for second.

U17 woman Michaela Raine used blocks for the first time in the 100m and this paid off with a new PB of 13.4 for second in the B string. Raine also ran well in the 300m (44.5). Emma Dewdney ran a courageous 200m with a new PB (29.7). Dewdney scored well also in the Pole Vault, clearing 2m exactly for second place.

Hannah Greenhalgh tried some new events this year, throwing 14.21m in the javelin and running 46.4 in the 300m and will be most pleased with her triple jump competition debut with second in the A string, 9.28m.

Nasteho Ali made her debut throwing 6.86m in the shot and running 54.6 in the 300m. Zara Koenigsberger threw a fine discus PB (19.23m) and a decent shot (7.86m). Jude Falkner extended her hammer best in style placing second in 38.21m, plus good points in the javelin (19.20).

Many competed in the relays with the U17 women’s team entirely made up of WNAC athletes, placing fourth. Thanks to the officials who worked hard in the heat.
