Oliver Short, from Lynn, has been selected to represent the Independent Schools National U18 rugby squad (the LAMBS) after an extensive national selection program which started with more than 300 players.
Short, who had previously been selected for and captained the Midlands LAMBS squad, joined the next stage of the selection process which included trials against the Northern and Southern regional squads and culminated last week in being selected for the prestigious national squad.
On Sunday the Wisbech Grammar School 1st XV rugby captain lined up for the LAMBS for the first time at Moseley RFC against Irish Exiles, with Short coming off the bench just after half-time making a big impact.
With six minutes to go and at 5-13 down on their own try line, Short made an 80 metre break down the blindside and up the wing, before offloading the ball to assist in the try with only two minutes to play.
A converted penalty with the last play of the match meant the LAMBS won their first game of the season, 15-13.
Next week they face the RFU Midlands Counties U18s at Uppingham School and Short has been named captain.
Over the next three months he will take part in fixtures across the country, including games against Irish Exiles, Saracens Academy, Northampton Saints Academy and Crawshay’s, the Welsh schools and colleges select side.
The season will culminate in a tour to Argentina over Easter.
