West Norfolk Community Badminton Network held its first-ever primary school competition at Alive Lynnsport, with assistance from College of West Anglia students.
Some 11 teams of four players from six schools entered the event, with all receiving a medal for participating.
The teams were split into two groups, playing half court singles against each other. In group A the clear winners were North Wootton boys who won all their matches, dropping only one game. Although second and third place was closely contested, Watlington Red just beat Clenchwarton Yellow team by one game to finish runners-up.
In Group B, there were many close matches, with Clenchwarton Blue emerging top after winning four matches and drawing the other to the runners-up, St Germans.
In the play-offs, North Wootton boys beat Clenchwarton Blue team to take the winners’ trophies, although it was a very close match with one game going to 15-14. Third place trophies went to St Germans, and although they drew 2-2 with Watlington Red, they scored more points.
The remaining placings were: fifth Watlington White, followed by Clenchwarton Yellow, St Martha’s 1, South Wootton girls, North Wootton girls, South Wootton 2 and St Martha’s 2.
Although some children already play in local clubs and at West Norfolk Juniors, it was encouraging to see so many youngsters taking part who have never played competitive badminton before. The organisers thank all the children who took part and also the CWA students for their help on the day.
