Ryston Runners were out in force at the Fenland Ten, which also incorporated the Eastern Veterans AC 10 mile Championships.

While the weather for the road race on Sunday was overcast, the performance of the
Ryston Runners was far from dull.

The flat and fast course goes in a loop through the Fens, starting and finishing at West Walton, and is notorious for subjecting competitors to strong gusts of wind.

Fortunately the weather was pleasantly calm and mild allowing all of the athletes to stretch their legs with many of them achieving PB’s (personal bests) in the field of 194 finishers.

The first Ryston home was Matt Pyatt in a time of 56 minutes and 11 seconds, taking second place.

Other award winners were: Warren Armstrong 1st male vet 40 years, Pete Johnson 1st male vet 60 and Lesley Robins 1st female vet 40.

In addition the race was an Eastern Veterans Athletic Club (EVAC) event with many of the Ryston members qualifying as they are members of that club too.

Award winners were: Matt Pyatt 1st senior male, Carl Manning 2nd male vet 50, Pete Johnson 1st male vet 60, Jeff Reed 2nd male vet 70, Karen Wood 1st female vet 50 and Wendy Fisher 2nd female vet 50.

The result by Jeff Reed was particularly pleasing, as it was not only a personal best for him, but also set a Ryston club record for the male vet 70-year-old category.

On the roads on Sunday, at the Yarmouth 10k Barry Smith, who recorded a personal best at the Yorkshire Marathon last weekend, was just 40 seconds shy of his PB over this shorter distance, recording 42.34.
