Conditions were almost perfect for the six Ryston Runners who were selected to represent Norfolk in the prestigious Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham, on Saturday.
Charlie Wakefield was first Norfolk runner home in the U13 Boys’ race, placing 20th out of 311 finishers and vindicating his selection to receive the junior XC award at the Norfolk County Awards evening at the end of the month. Bailey Took was third Norfolk scorer and 191st overall.
Kate Willis, despite suffering from a nasty cough, placed 74th in the 340 strong U13 Girls’ field, with sister Meg also gaining valuable experience and placing 240th.
Annie Rooks finished 105th in the U17 Girls’ race.
Callum Stanforth, also recently laid low and missing training due to a cold and injury, battled on to justify his first wearing of a Norfolk vest and acquitted himself admirably over the tough, hilly course in the Senior Men’s race. Second claimer Danny Rock, running for Suffolk, placed 216th.
l The final event in the 2015-16 Ryston XCGP series took place on Sunday at Shouldham Warren. It marked the end of an era as Marlene and Martin Simmonds are stepping aside from organising the event after two decades.
Charlie Wakefield made it a memorable day by breaking the 22-year old club U13 course record that had been held by Andrew Simmonds, who was the first to congratulate the new record holder on his success, coming a day after this excellent Inter Counties run. Bailey Took also ran on the second consecutive day and placed third.
This was one of two junior categories in which the course records fell.
