Sport - Athletics: Hannah leads fine medal haul

Have your say

Nine of West Norfolk AC’s best young athletes took part in the Norfolk County Sportshall Championships at the weekend.

The club won 12 medals altogether, three of which were gold against the top talent from across the county.

Furthermore, selection for the county team was up for grabs to take part in the Eastern Region Championships next month.

Under 13 athlete Hannah Greenhalgh won one gold and two silver.

Greenhalgh won gold in the standing vertical jump and silver in the speed bounce and also the six-lap race.

She was closely followed by under 11 star Harry Basset, who won the speed bounce and also gained bronze in the long jump and javelin, using his gymnastic skills to great effect.

The other gold medallist was under 13 boy Daniel Harvey, who claimed a fantastic success in the six-lap race.

Harvey added a bronze in the four-lap race where he was within a tenth of a second from victory.

Lucy Edwards (under 15) was one such athlete who made the final of the four and two-lap races, finishing fourth and sixth respectively.

Edwards could have passed in one of the events to save energy but showed real character to represent the club with pride.

She was rewarded with a fine silver in the speed bounce and a fourth in the long jump.

Under 13 girl Emma Dewdney finished fourth, just outside the medals, in the long jump, triple jump and shot, but progressed to the final of the two-lap race where she won bronze.

Kelly Scales proved herself as a future talent as a younger under 13 athlete in the two-lap race and was an excellent fifth in the speed bounce. Sophia Basset (under 11) gained a top-ten position in the two-lap race before picking up a great bronze in the speed bounce.

In the same age group, Olivia Stevens another one for the future like Sophia Basset, managed three top-ten finishes and showed real strength for silver in the ball throw event.

Abigail Rice, another under 11 athlete, showed real agility and speed for fifth in the speed bounce and fourth in the two-lap race.

Rice, who made the county team, was a tenth away from gold in a tight finish and a little unlucky.

Most of the athletes will compete for West Norfolk in the Keith Ward/County Indoor Athletic event later this month.

Congratulations to Daniel Harvey, Emma Dewdney and Hannah Greenhalgh and Lucy Edwards, who have also been selected to represent Norfolk against the other East Anglian counties in February.
