Sport - Athletics: Marie in county debut for Norfolk

Have your say

There were cross country debut performances in county vests for two Ryston women athletes at the Southern AA Inter Counties match at Woodford on Saturday.

The going was heavy and muddy, but Marie French placed 26th out of 59 in the senior women’s race, was the second Norfolk scorer.

Annie Rooks was placed 68th out of 84 in the under 15 girls’ race, the third scorer for the Norfolk team in this category.

On the road, Allan Hamilton clocked 1.23 from gun to tape (1.13 chip time) to place 16th overall/ 32nd M40 out of the 45 finishers in the Puma Stockport ten-mile race.

Rather belatedly, three Ryston women have discovered that they were placed as the fifth team in the recent City of Norwich half-marathon.

The scoring team comprised Marie French, Helen Melville, and Susan Matthews.

In the first event of the Fritton Lake Winter XC Sprint Duathlon Series, on Sunday, Marcus Hawkins was placed third overall.

The event comprised of a 3km run, then 10km cycle section, before a further 1.5km run over a very muddy course.

Last Wednesday, more than 30 members and friends from fellow clubs attended a seminar.

This was hosted by Ryston Runners Athletics Club at the Downham Town Sports Federation.

Supported by funding from the Norfolk Network, the seminar was led by AKA endurance coach Nick Anderson and covered key aspects of preparing and training for races in excess of half-marathon distance.
