ENGLISH BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIPS
West Acre’s Phillip Welham plays in the semi-finals of the English Billiards Championships tomorrow at the Whitworth Institute, Darley Dale, Derbyshire.
Welham, twice English champion in 2000 and 2005, reached the semi-finals after a strong win over Geoff Brassington (Chester) in the last 16 1147 (72, 95, 60, 219, 55, 51)-712 (71, 52, 51).
The West Acre man was virtually level with Brassington after the first two hours of this game, but pulled away in the second half, recording breaks of 95, 60, 219, 55 and 51.
Welham then met Jason Goodwin (Sussex) in the quarter-finals and started the match in high scoring form, recording successive breaks of 83, 61, 67 and 69 to lead the Brighton player by 250 after the first 30 minutes.
A later break of 123 gave Welham a 300-point lead going into the interval (685-351).
Goodwin commenced the second half in better form recording breaks of 57, 93 and 51 to reduce his deficit to under 200, but the West Acre man with breaks of 61, 132, 55 and 57 again pulled away to secure the victory 1208-862 and his place in the semis where he will meet Mark Hatton (Middlesbrough) over four hours.
The 2016 final will be played the following day at the same venue. Rob Hall (Lincoln) is the three times and defending champion.
