Stowmarket 15’s Festival
West Colts travelled with a good squad to face some very good opposition, and a test of how the team is progressing.
First up were a strong looking Woodbridge side. West began to play some good rugby which got them close to the try line where Hayden Revell scored a classic scrum half try. West’s second came after a strong run from Rhys Charalamous and a timely offload put Joe Shirley in. West’s third try was an individual run from the bullish Charalambous. Result: 15-0 for West.
Then in a very one sided affair West ran in five tries against the hosts.
Tries: Charalambous, Revell (2) and John Nwaneri (2). Result: 27-0 for West.
The group decider was against Braintree, a 0-10 loss. The previous game seemed to have disrupted West’s play as they continued to run the ball into contact rather than offload. This played into the hands of their opponents.
West were caught short out wide after a penalty was conceded close to their try line.
A poor defensive clearance gave Braintree the opportunity to score again.
West faced Colchester in the Plate semi-final. The game started with both teams showing some strong defensive work. Colchester broke the deadlock with a strong run from No. 8.
After some good work in the backs Nwaneri closed the gap when he went in at the corner and West were just two points behind. As West pushed hard for another score an unfortunate clearing kick was pounced on by Colchester to run in their second try; final score 5-14.
This was a great performance from all the lads and bodes well for the season.
l West 1st team lost 57-5 at leaders Epping Upper Clapton in London North East 3. Their next league fixture is at home to Stowmarket on October 24.
