Jessica Bateman and Charlie Wakefield from West Norfolk Junior Badminton have won gold and silver medals in national Badminton England tournaments.
Bateman (13), from Dersingham, played in the Essex bronze level tournament last weekend and won gold in the girl’s doubles event.
Jessica played with her regular partner, Caitlin Parfitt from Norwich. Despite losing one game in the group; the girls went through to the semi-finals as runners-up.
There they easily beat the other group winners 21-8 to reach the final where they took the title, defeating a pair from Surrey by 21-10.
Jessica reached the quarter-finals of the singles event after winning her initial group, but was unable to progress to the next stage.
Wakefield (13), from Feltwell, also tasted success at a recent national tournament in Suffolk, the under 13 bronze level event. Playing with Parfitt in the mixed doubles, they won all four games in their group, then the semi-final and only just lost in the final by 21-18 to win the silver medals.
In a high level entry, Charlie and younger brother Harry each won two games in the group stages of the singles, but neither reached the knock-out stage. They then paired up in doubles and also won two out of four games, losing one by only 19-21 and the other even closer, 20-21.
