ALEX BRUNDLE is taking another step up the motor racing ladder – and towards his dream of an F1 seat.
The West Norfolk racer has joined Surrey-based team Carlin for this year’s GP3 Series, which has helped the careers of F1 drivers such as Kimi Raikkonen, Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel.
The 21-year-old Brundle, who has previously competed in Formula Two and Formula 3 will make his racing debut in the GP3 Series in Barcelona later this year.
The Norfolk-born racer competed in FIA Formula Two last season – picking up three podiums and one pole position. As well as racing in F2 in 2011 and 2009, Brundle raced in the British F3 International Series in 2010, having learnt his race craft in Formula Palmer Audi in 2007 and 2008.
Brundle comes from a racing heritage, as the son of former F1 driver Martin, who raced from 1984 to 1996 and is now a highly-respected television commentator.
Forming part of the Formula 1 support package, the GP3 Series visits some of Europe’s most prestigious race circuits and for the first time in 2012, the series will also visit Monaco, giving the GP3 drivers their first taste of the challenging street circuit.
Speaking about his new team, Brundle said, “I am thrilled to be competing in the GP3 Series in 2012. I was keen to move onto the F1 stage this year and I would like to thank the Carlin team for offering me a fantastic opportunity to do that.
“The GP3 Series also fits well with my commitments to Nissan in the European Le Mans Series allowing me to continue my development in single seater racing. I would like to thank my sponsors GAC, Richard Mille and Liberty IU for their continued support which allows me to compete at this high level in international motorsport.
“The work we have done so far has already given me an understanding of why the Carlin team are so successful and I feel very confident for the season ahead.”
Racing director Trevor Carlin added, “We’re delighted to welcome Alex to our team for the 2012 season. GP3 is an extremely competitive series and a level playing field where driver talent can really make a difference.
“Having seen Alex race early on in his career in British F3, I’m sure that he will be a great asset to Carlin. Even at this early stage the team have been impressed with his maturity and work ethic and I’m sure we’ll see some great racing from him this season.”
The GP3 Series will kick off in Barcelona in May, before visiting Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone, Hockenheim, Budapest, Spa-Francorchamps with the season finale in Monza in September.
One of the most successful single-seater teams outside F1, Carlin has won over 185 races and claimed six British F3 championships and the 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 drivers’ title.
As previously reported, Alex and Martin will be driving in this years Le Mans 24 hours race with Nissan and the Greaves Motorsport LMP2 team.
For Martin it will be a break from his commitments with the new Sky Sports F1 channel, having previously been an award-winning commentator for both ITV and BBC.
